Thank a Veteran This Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is upon us. Time for parades and barbecues. Meanwhile let us not forget to say thank you.

As we celebrate the long weekend. Make plans for picnics, parades and food. It is not without our veterans that we have this luxury.
I personally come from a family of veterans. Both my grandfather’s served in the military as did my mother. Many that will read this have lost family members and friends in the many wars that have been served.
When we decide to show gratitude for these men and women of our armed forces. It goes beyond throwing a parade or flying our flag. Many of these men and women sacrificed their futures for us as well.

Statistically many of the homeless that you pass by on the street today on your way to the party or parade. They are veterans that fought to protect our country. Yet when they returned, they have been ignored. They deserve more, they deserve better, some need real help others just need a hand.

“We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.”
~ Red Poppies

Cities and towns consider them blight. Just yesterday I read an article about how a service center for them is a problem for the community. If the communities did what was needed many of these veterans would be celebrated rather than discarded. This Memorial Day as we tend to cemeteries

Christmas is Love in Action

Another Christmas is upon us. We have scurried about getting those last-minute gifts. We anxiously await those presents to be opened. Through it all, the crowds and the traffic, we made it so Christmas would be perfect. Guess what… it won’t be.. we are all a mess. This day is not about the gifts all wrapped with pretty red and green bows. The perfect Christmas happened over two thousand years ago. Ever since we have been missing its purpose. God gave us His ONLY Son to save our souls. Yet every year as we celebrate His birth we sell the very souls he came to save. If there is no Christmas in your heart there is no Christmas under the tree. Click To Tweet We spend money on things we don’t need and for what… to be the star of the show? Lavish gifts that sparkle and shine, we buy the latest fad just to be cool. Spending money, time and anxiety to find that perfect gift. Only to have it opened in seconds, a few oohs an awes and then set aside. This is not what Christmas is all about. We should take this time to seek forgiveness and healing. While others share the store-bought glitter, why not share from the heart what matters. Many families will be celebrating this day.. celebrating alone and lonely with regret and pain. That family member or friend that you have not talked to in a while. Why not call them on Christmas, a little sign you care. […]

10 Little Known Thanksgiving Facts

As we belly up to the table to eat massive amounts of turkey…here is some food for thought on Thanksgiving. 1. Thomas Jefferson thought the idea of Thanksgiving was “the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard.” 2. Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey. That would just be weird. An eagle, he wrote in a letter to his daughter, had “bad moral character.” A turkey, on the other hand, was a “much more respectable bird.” 3. Turkeys were one of the first species to be domesticated in America. Guess that makes countries like China or Korea almost normal. ( research their delicacies as I prefer not to give credit here) 4. Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor, and author of ‘Mary had a little lamb’, tried to make Thanksgiving a holiday in 1827 and was successful. 5. Congress did not declare Thanksgiving a national holiday until 1941. It was declared to be the fourth Thursday of November. 6. The first Thanksgiving lasted three days. Maybe that’s why people eat three days worth in one day. 7. Since Harry Truman a turkey has been pardoned for Thanksgiving every year. 8. T.V. dinners would never have existed if Thanksgiving did not happen.  After over estimating by 26 tons of turkey for the holiday Swanson sliced and repackaged it into the frozen T.V. dinner. 9. Turkeys are known to have heart attacks just like people. After some Air Force flight practice testing the sound barrier they found turkeys in the area dead. 10. Turkeys will be eaten […]
