You Must Point Your Sail Before You Launch

You can’t be a procrastinator in business! It is not fair to your customers, your marriage any of it! You keep saying these words they are warning signs for your business. On a recent phone call with my coaches they laid down the framework of tough love . Words very similar to those above punched me in the mouth or perhaps gut. Punching holes in the side of the boat I had been sailing in for so long. I had been going about this all wrong. Wandering in the sea of my own past. Believing the lies I had been told. Treading water above my self-inflicted misery. It was the time that I point my sail and use these fresh winds of truth to tack and jibe towards my dreams. As we worked through some more difficult questions in preparation for upcoming consulting, one of them, in particular, gave me a dose of smash mouth love. For many years, as long as I can remember, in fact, I have always done things my way. Never open to critiques or criticism no matter the source. My arrogance and ego pushed everyone to the edges of my life’s sphere, including God. I pretended to have it all together. Confidence oozed out of me as I walked through life, leaving a trail of carnage in my wake. I started a cycle of destructive self-speech that I began to believe. Words I heard growing up became a part of the threads of my humanity. Weaving through me until all […]

5 Reasons Why You Should go to Conferences

Did you know there are conferences for just about any niche these days? I get asked all the time why do I go to conferences? The answer should be simple. I go to conferences for many reasons that I cannot narrow it down to just one. You see every conference is different. But yet they are so much the same. This past weekend I spent at Word Camp a conference for WordPress users and developers. This coming weekend I will be in Atlanta for a conference for dreamers. One I was an attendee the other I will also have the opportunity to speak at during a panel discussion. Both conferences I am attending for many of the same reasons as I am always seeking to learn from others. For me, conferences are like little mental vacations: a chance to go visit an interesting place for a couple of days, and come back rested and refreshed with new ideas and perspectives. ~Erin McKean Here are a few reasons you should go to conferences, even if you know nothing about the conference. 5 Reasons Why You Should go to Conferences 1. You will learn –  If you want to be a leader in your industry you must always be learning new skills. Even if you think you are a master of your trade, there is always someone else that knows more. What better way to learn than from those who know first hand. Perhaps it is not your business idol that is the main speaker at the […]

Do You Have Mighty Big Shoes to Fill?

Growing up I heard that I had  “mighty big shoes to fill” quite often. Many people grow up thinking they want to be like someone else. Whether we are trying to follow the footsteps of our father, or in my case grandfather or some other person we want to be like. The shoes we long to fill seem unobtainable and never the right size or fit. Shoes are usually pretty personal, I don’t know too many guys that share their sneakers with their friends. Yet we spend much of our lives trying to fill the shoes of others before us. We spend our childhood looking up to others. It could be a family member, friend, or even a church or community leader. Hoping to be like them, we change who we were born to be. Sometimes we spend such an effort to be like someone else we begin to forget who we really are. We might talk differently, hang out with an unusual crowd. Maybe we work at places that challenge our morals, all just to be like someone else who we think has it all. I’ve got big shoes to fill. This is my chance to do something. I have to seize the moment. ~ Andrew Jackson All the meanwhile we ignore God’s design for our own lives. Getting consumed by the expectations of others we fail to see our creators fingerprints and true beauty. Forgoing our own destiny we chase after dreams, fancy clothes and fast cars trying to fill a void we […]
